Last message from N.B.

We're still in Fredericton. We weren't supposed to be - we were supposed to flly to Halifax yesterday, but my friend Kenda's children have had stomach flu and yesterday her husband came down with it, so we thought it prudent to cancel our flight and drive across today instead. Mum and Dad are kindly driving us over (it takes about 4 hours one way) and we'll all stay overnight in a hotel. I'm still hoping to meet up with Kenda tomorrow, even if it's just for a few hours.

On Saturday night we take our long flight back to the U.K. It leaves at 9:10 p.m. local time, and arrives at around 8 a.m. London time. When we flew back from Boston on the overnight flight Amelia hardly slept, so I'm not getting my hopes up this time.

Talk to you when we're back.

Some photos

Below are a few photos from our trip, courtesy of Mum's digital camera.

In answer to Dale, a friend in Toronto whom we didn't get time to see (next time!) and one of the few people who comments on this blog, I think Canada still feels more like home for me. It takes longer than a year to feel settled in a place - it took us more than five years the last time we made a transatlantic move.

Only 2.5 more days here in Fredericton, and then we're off to Halifax to visit with my good friends Kenda and Mike and their kids before we head back to England on the weekend.

More later.

Greetings from Canada

Amelia and I are visiting my parents in New Brunswick. We arrived yesterday afternoon, after a two-day stopover in Toronto/Mississauga. My apologies to those of you in Toronto whom we were not able to see. The time was just too short.

This is the first time we’ve been back in Canada for nearly a year. Amelia was very good on the flight from the UK, contrary to my expectations. She played with the toys I brought and read her books, but she didn’t sleep until we were starting our descent, which was at midnight our time. Then she looked up at me, closed her eyes, and flopped over. She slept through the landing, the long shuttle ride around the airport periphery, customs, and getting the luggage. Lucky for her! I was surprised that we had to get a shuttle – due to the ongoing construction, I guess. The young guy at customs was very friendly and welcomed us back to Canada. He was a complete contrast to the American customs officer we encountered in Boston in June. That one was a big heavyset guy called Buckley who chewed gum and only spoke to us in monosyllables.

As we were landing in Toronto, our wheels down and gliding toward the runway, the engines suddenly revved back up and we jerked abruptly up and around. Having experienced quite a few landings, I thought to myself, “That’s not supposed to happen.” Sure enough, the pilot came on a few seconds later and told us we’d have to go around again as he’d had to “execute a missed approach due to traffic on the runway.” Nice.

Our stay with our friends in Mississauga was lovely. We landed in hot, muggy weather, which we’re not used to. My first impression, from the air, was how ugly Mississauga is. Not fair, really. There are some leafy green parts. But a lot of unattractive ones, too. It was great to see our friends. Amelia had a wonderful time playing with the children. Thanks to Dave and Jackie for your hospitality, Gerald and Veruschka for the pool party, Jackie and Eva for the rides from and to the airport, and everyone else for reminding me what friends are for.

Chilling out down here in NB for the next 10 days. Weather is lovely. Visiting with my parents, and with my sister and brother-in-law, who are expecting a baby next February. We’ll visit my friends Kenda and Mike and their children in NS before flying back out of Halifax next week. Hopefully Ian will have finished his dissertation by then!

A short note

Not much to report. We visited Ian's sister and family in Birmingham on the weekend, and then went to see his parents. Amelia's teeth kept her awake one night, and I had to take her downstairs to avoid waking everyone. Ian's sister was surprised to find us on the sofa in the morning!

I've made an appointment to take Amelia to see the dentist next week, to make sure there isn't anything wrong with her molars. They are taking such a long time coming, and causing her so much pain. The sound of her grinding is like marbles rubbing together.

I finished my OU assignment, so now the course is over. When I was doing it, it seemed like a lot of work, but now I miss it.

Amelia and I walked into town today with a woman we met who lives in this same development. She has twins who are 22 months - a boy and a girl. If you're the parent of one small child and are feeling harrassed, I recommend spending some time with the mother of twins. You'll feel better!

A note to Dale, who mentioned something on his blog musings and meanderings recently about how people in the UK would be glad of some sun - it's actually been quite sunny here, apart from the past week or so. Nice temperatures, too - mid-20's. Sometimes I miss that hot 30's sun, though. But I don't miss having to have the air conditioning on all the time. (Thanks Lynda for the info. on how to add links.)

Have more photos - will post soon. Must get digital camera...
