the end of the game

Fabulous twists and memorable characters. I’ll remember it for a long time to come.

extract:

I know David doesn’t like it here, although he never says so. It was my idea to come—I thought this would be somewhere new, an adventure.

David spends the days up at the main building, sitting in the shade on the patio, reading the few tattered books that other people have left behind. Sometimes he plays chess with the man who looks at me. I watch them from my hammock under the palm trees, and I wonder what they say to each other.

There are times when I sit with him, flipping through the books, or looking at postcards I’ve bought, with no one to send them to. I write imaginary messages: “Beautiful weather.” “Scenery fantastic.” “See you soon.” But never: “I’m sorry.”
